The Event
At 5:30 p.m. on Thursday February 1st 2007 a total of ten to fifteen strange lights were spotted over North London in the inner-city district of Islington. The Islington police have confirmed that they began to receive phone calls from witnesses only a couple of minutes after the objects began to appear in the skies above Islington. A 34 year-old market stall trader by the name of Alix McAllister witnessed the objects and stated the following - "I just picked up my son from nursery in Bredgar Road. I had just come out of the door when I noticed what was going on in the sky. There were a group of them - 10 to 15 of them moving together. My first impression was that they reminded me of a squadron of aeroplanes in formation. But they didn't have a proper formation and they were all moving at the same speed. I thought for a while that something was happening in the centre of London. Bombs and planes crossed my mind. But I realised very quickly that they didn't look like any aircraft I'd seen before. They were coming from the north and moving south. And then they kind of stopped and they were hovering. There was no sound. They seemed to fade away and I saw more coming and then they stopped. It lasted about 10 minutes."
The police in Islington reported the event to the Contact International UFO Research organization. A spokesmen for the group said that the witness had told them the following - "He told me he was picking his daughter up from school and he saw many people looking up in the air. Traffic had stopped and people were staring. He said he saw between 12 and 15 orange lights travelling across the sky. Then they would stop and then they went upwards."
UFO’s or Balloons?
My personal theory at this stage is that this event could have simply been caused by balloons being released in celebration of a birthday or other special event. The only reason I mention the possibility of this being Balloons mis-identified as UFO’s is because it has happened many times before in the United Kingdom. Also some of the details associated with this event do add up to balloons for example one witness mentioned above said the lights were "orange" and would "stop and then go upwards" these balloons I am referring to are orange and can have the appearance of stopping and then as air is gathered below the balloon it is pushed up further into the sky by the up thrust. An example of were this has occurred actually comes from my very location in East Durham around 15 or 20 balloons with tiny orange lights inside were released by a prankster and floated over Durham were more than ten witnesses witnessed them and thought they were UFO’s. A report was featured in the Sunderland Echo newspaper only later to be discovered that in fact all that was seen was a group of balloons the following picture was taken of the balloons -
As you can see anybody seeing those lights in the sky is enough for anybody to think something strange is going on. The following site is responsible for selling these balloons - www.ufoballoons.com I don‘t advise anybody to use these balloons as they do cause these types of UFO events. The events ultimately lead to unnecessary time wasting to police services who receive calls about them I understand the balloons do present an impressive display but do cause unnecessary trouble and in my opinion should be banned. So was this phenomena over London just another case of balloons causing false reports or was there an alien visitation? I think as time goes by the truth will eventually be told.
