Mike was right about that! He had no intention of letting his baby sister get the best of him. He convinced Mother to allow me to do more around the house. Saturday was 'hell day', if I did not get out of the house before Mother got up. Otherwise, I was stuck with such chores as making breakfast, cleaning the dishes, sweeping the floors and helping with the laundry.
Sometimes, when Mike was not around on a Saturday afternoon and I was stuck doing chores, Kyle came to the rescue. He would help me finish my tasks, so I could play ball with him. He taught me how to throw and hit a ball. Kyle was a very good teacher.
One Saturday afternoon when I had finished folding the laundry, I heard Mike talking to Joey in the back yard. I glanced out the back door. I saw Joey holding the bat, while Mike threw the ball. Kyle caught it and tossed it back to Mike.
I was furious. 'Not again!'
I ran out the back door. I wanted to take the bat from Joey and use it on Mike. But, before I got there, Joey had thrown the bat at Mike. The bat hit Mike in the leg. Joey ran inside the house and into the bathroom. He locked the door.
Fortunately, Mother was in one of her moods and did not want to deal with Mike or Joey. Mike took off on his bike. Joey came out of the bathroom when he knew Mike had left.
An hour later, an overwhelming feeling of happiness surrounded me. It was like being wrapped in a soft blanket of joy. I knew before Father opened the back door, that he had come home to stay.
More to come…
