A New Look At Dana Howard’s "Up Rainbow Hill"
Encounters With A Space Sister From A Far Off World
by Sean Casteel

"The sacred flame grew into a holocaust of splendor, continuing for an indefinite time. It finally died away, leaving only an essence. Alive with the fire of creation, everything within my range of vision had changed. The landscape, the wildflowers, the trees. They fairly scintillated with an array of gorgeous hues. They were not something apart now. I was ONE with them. They were ONE with me. In those sacred moments, I came to know the meaning of life. With the opening of the channels of perception, the living reality of all things I understood with clarity. No longer bound to the bondage of the earth, my mind and soul were at last free to travel at will."

All of that would be quite the eye-opener for anybody, to say the least. One comparison that immediately springs to mind is a term that the late psychiatrist/abduction researcher Dr. John Mack put forth in his book, "Abduction." According to Mack, one of the first reactions an abductee has to becoming consciously aware of their encounters with aliens is something called "Ontological Shock." The abductee has his or her entire conception of reality suddenly thrown out the window along with the kitchen sink of their everyday thought processes. The person is then forced to start building a new reality, one that includes the consciously recalled encounter and any prior and subsequent ones as well.

In those terms, Howard is clearly experiencing a total immersion in a completely new world view, a transformative moment of clarity and oneness that also FEELS physically palpable. Her body, mind and spirit are being kicked into a higher gear involuntarily and she begins a life of service devoted to opening the mind of mankind to both the seriousness of our dilemma and the salvation we can partake of if we somehow manage to put aside our all-too-human sins of vanity and greed. While the breakthrough experience, as Mack describes it, is often seen in very negative terms by the newly conscious abductee, in Howard’s case it seems to have been a happy, even ecstatic moment for her.

Howard’s spiritual journey got another jump start on April 29, 1955, when she was attending a séance by medium Bertie Lilly Candler in a small white church in Los Angeles. Candler managed to summon up and materialize an eight-foot tall, blonde woman from Venus called Diane. It was Diane who would lead Howard in the subsequent writing of most of her eight books.

It should be noted that in a field crowded with men, like George Adamski, George Van Tassel, Truman Bethurum, George Hunt Williamson and others, Dana Howard was one of the few females chosen to deliver the aliens’ message to the world. It is also quite significant that Howard saw a Space Sister, not the standard long haired blonde male entity so often reported by her fellows as the archetypal Space Brother. One senses that the aliens are sending a definite message about their faith in women and in female empowerment more than a decade before the earliest beginnings of the Women’s Liberation Movement in the early to late 1960s. This may also serve as a continuation of the female principle in world religions, like the elevation of the Virgin Mary in the Catholic belief system to a level equal or in some cases greater than her son Jesus. Humankind has always required that there be a female aspect to divinity, even in the largely patriarchal, male-centered Judeo-Christian tradition. If Mary as the Divine Feminine had not existed, people would surely have been forced to invent her as another tender aspect of the Goddess necessary to soften the hard edges of the male Divinity.

The Space Sister Diane boldly declares a powerful maternal role for the fairer sex in one appearance she made to Dana.

"Many times," Diane says, "I have been seen over the hallowed spots of the Earth. I have ministered to the sufferings on the bloody fields of battle. Child of Earth – I AM THE SPIRIT OF WOMANHOOD AFLOAT ON THE SEA OF LIFE. When changes are imminent, it is the task of woman to usher in the new birth. I shall walk the streets of Earth. I shall hover over your humanity until the day of transition comes. Some will see me in bodily form, others in my twin shadowy body."

Dana Howard’s message makes sense in a field that quite often sidesteps the normal sense of things. There are those who argue that the entire contactee movement was an exercise in the ridiculous or that it was an extension of ridiculous things that had gone before. In his handy reference work "The UFO Book: Encyclopedia of the Extraterrestrial," author Jerome Clark says it all boils down to a recycling of older beliefs.

"Contactees typically have a history," Clark writes, "of involvement with occultism and New Age doctrines. The space people they encounter discourse at length on cosmic science and philosophy, and the earthly provenance of the content is not hard to discern. The core of the contactee message is simply a continuation of the teaching of the occult-metaphysical religious tradition."
