As you can see, this article is going to be complicated.

Before the ball gets rolling too quickly here, let’s quickly analyze what it means to be a true “King”. After all, there are many who possess the title these days, but do they deserve it?

A King is basically someone who rules or lords it over a domain or a people – or in some cases, even an entire planet or across dimensions. Now, some people might assume that lordship over anything automatically implies tyranny or being a despot, and given the examples of past leaders we’ve had here on Earth, it is probably safe to say that they’re right. However, lordship can also embody qualities such as humility, wisdom, and benevolence. In other words, being a “King” can also mean becoming an example for others. An inspiration. A hero.

Well, if what is written of him is true, then the man known to the western world as Jesus could certainly be seen as being a hero. According to theologians and most modern day Christians, the man from Galilee was wise, compassionate, attentive, humble, and highly charismatic. He reportedly did not keep secrets or conspire against people. He did not seek to enrich himself at anyone’s expense, and he never once harmed or killed anyone. He “walked the talk” in regards to everything he preached. He was a true Monarch in every sense of the word.

But.

As great as Jesus was and remains in the minds of many, can we truly say that his story is unique? The tale of the Egyptian deity Horus for example, is almost identical and far older: an outcast born via immaculate conception returns to his homeland after a long hiatus in exile. He then usurps the ruling lord and reclaims his throne as the true King and leader of the people.

We can even go further back than ancient Egypt into paganism, where it was believed that the Sun itself was reborn or resurrected after a three-day period of darkness (symbolized by the three days following the winter solstice every year on December 21st or the 22nd), thus climbing progressively higher and higher in the sky and vanquishing the darkness to become the new ruler over the lands and Earth. December 21st, 2012, anyone?

Seen in this light, the Christian version of the life and times of Jesus Christ seems like rehashed material and not very original. Heck, at this point, we may as well be talking about Simba or Aragorn. After all, both were basically jobless drifters or losers who overcame great trials to become who they were meant to be. It’s all the same story.

One of two scenarios must therefore be true in regards to these types of savior-based tales:

These concepts are a by-product of our imagination and are designed to enrich religious leader’s wallets.

They are true and accurately describe and depict a true phenomenon, namely, that someone or something “out there” is returning to Earth time and time again to directly interfere with humanity and trying to steer or guide it into a certain direction.

Personally, I would say that both answers contain some truth. For instance, religious bodies and organizations have become filthy rich because of religious figures such as Jesus (I say “filthy” because of the manner in which gold and other riches have been obtained. Many Indigenous and non-Indigenous societies and cultures the world over have been enslaved or killed to enrich religious authorities’ coffers).

The space or Heaven based “savior of the Earth” phenomenon could also be true, since it appears to reoccur so frequently in our history (the last one having taken place around two thousand years ago).
