The days of Blue Book and similar projects are long gone. Those weren’t the best, not by any means, and in fact, often their purpose was to debunk, but at least the public had an official government agency pretending to care.
A recent article about this topic (Don’t Bother the FAA) discusses the FAA’s refusal to take reports. Instead, they encourage people to contact Peter Davenport of the NUFORC. Davenport, according to article writer Billy Cox, is frustrated at the tons of stuff he has to go through:
Davenport says he receives “probably 50 videotapes a week” – most of which is junk – and calls it “disheartening” and “flabbergasting” to sift through “what Americans will look at and say, ‘Is that a UFO?’ This is an area where I agree with skeptics and debunkers.”
In many ways, I don’t blame him. He does a huge job that our own government refuses to do -- openly anyway, we can only guess what’s going on below the surface -- with no financial support. He doesn’t have time for nonsense. No one denies he’s providing a great service, and I, among others, thank him.
But one persons UFO sighting is not always someone else’s stupid useless light in the sky. For one thing, as we know, the sighting caught on film or video is often nothing like the eye witness experience. Very often the two things are as different as night and day. When I made my report to Davenport a few years ago, he berated me for not putting my husband on the phone. There were two reason I didn’t: one, he just didn’t want to, and I had to respect that. And two, he didn’t see anything! He said it my sighting was “just a light in the sky” well yes, it was. But it was a very weird light that did some very weird things, and very close to an airplane, which also startled me a bit. It made some very odd movements and at the time, it was a strong enough sighting for me to report it. (I have since thought that possibly it was a remote controlled device, maybe someone’s toy, but if so, it was a remarkably stupid thing to do. And hey wait a minute, a remote control toy can’t go that high up, can it? )
Our choices are indeed limited. Try the local media, if you dare. If they air your story, the old yuk yuk factor is still there, although this is not always the case. If your local media doesn’t respond, try your local police, airport, etc. See if you get anywhere. If they refer you to the MUFON people in your area, you might get somewhere. It won’t make the news, however. And if you get Peter Davenport’s NUFORC be sure to have all your ducks in a row.
