However, one time I heard a noise coming from the back bedroom in the early evening. My brothers and I were playing with the Curie kids next door, while Mother was talking their parents. Father was late getting home from his medical appointment and so I thought the house was empty. When I crept into the house to use the bathroom, I heard a noise coming from the back bedroom. At first, I thought it was Father, so I ignored the sound and closed the bathroom door. After I washed up, I heard a loud bang, like something or someone had fallen on the floor. I left the bathroom and walked towards the bedroom. The door was open, but the light was not on. I saw the tall, thin shape of someone rummaging through a box on the floor. Immediately, I knew it was not Father.
Believing it had to be one of my older brothers, "What are you looking for?"
When the person did not answer, I knew something was wrong. Terribly wrong! I ran outside to tell Mother.
As I ran towards her, I saw my brothers playing football near the streetlight.
"Someone is in the house," I mumbled.
Mother slapped a mosquito on her arm standing next to Mrs. Curie. "Well, I'll be going in soon and then I'll get my broom and chase the boogeyman away."
I saw her wink at Mrs. Curie. She did not believe me! Surely, she knew I was not lying.
But, Mother believed in ghosts. Perhaps, she knew it was an apparition of some sort. Maybe, she had seen it before and that's why she was not concerned.
Yet, I was concerned. Very concerned!
From that day on, I always made sure the door to that room stayed closed.
