Murphy mentions pathworking is not really soemthing that should be tried
unless a person is able to accept certain truths about themselves. What one
can find in meditation and journeying can cause them, for the first time, to
see some rather disturbing things about themselves. Then the objective is to
face these things, to get rid of unwanted baggage and find inner peace. To
obtain this, one needs to see others as mirrors of God not as a way to help
them obtain material goods.
Murphy says those with severe psychological problems and not seeing a
therapist regarding it, those having a mental illness or drug dependency
should not undertake pathworking. "This is because one need a clear mind to
do the journey. If a mind is not clear, things could get frightening." It
has been said that during pathworking, creatures have been encountered. Not
to be thought of as demons, these creatures can be guides or aspects of
ourselves. One would hope that they would lead us to knowledge about
ourselves or to questions we have to answer. Not to encounter these
creatures during pathworking would be considered unusual.
Murphy goes on by saying:"Fortunately most are not apt to be harmed by
journeying. Some may feel the information they find out about themselves is
more than what they can handle. A person need to find out the things that
trouble them and why. Only then can these obstacles can overcome and
changed. It's much like having a bad tooth pulled. No one likes it but it
does feel better afterwards.
Murphy explains that depending on the individual being willing to learn
about pathworking or journeying, it can be done alone. But if one can
contact others who have used pathworking, the individual can decide for if
it is for them. According to Murphy, Kabbalah is another story because of
the many complicated dimensions to it. Thus it is recommended to have a
teacher for Kabbalah because of the depth involved. One need not to be
religious to do Kabbalah but it helps believing that there is a Source who
has created us.
Murphy finished by saying Tarot is another good starting point for
pathworking. Not only does it break the ice between people to pinpoint
problems and goals but also the Tarot Cards themselves can be used for
journey topics. Also the Tarot is easily combined with the Kabbalah Tree of
Life. Those of the Golden Dawn tradition placed the cards along the 32
pathways of the Tree and the 10 Sefirot. So in itself, the Tarot and
Kabbalah becomes a road map to pathworking. It is wise to work with the
Tarot, not so much as a fortune telling device but more as a spiritual
guide.
