MUFON On Stephenvilleby Regan Lee
Posted: 13:00 June 5, 2008
Not long ago, MUFON announced its conclusions on the Stephenville, UFO sightings that had been going on since December of 2007 in that part of Texas. According to the May 19 edition of the Star-Telegram, MUFON was:
unable to conclusively confirm that what people in the Stephenville area saw in January was a bona-fide UFO.
I find that startling: “bona-fide UFO.” What’s a “bona-fide UFO?” If it’s unidentified, it’s a UFO. Simple. Elegant, even. But both skeptics and some within UFOlogy insist on playing around with the term UFO. They want it changed to, say, UAP, or assume it means little green men from Mars,-- anything except what it does mean: Unidentified.
One of the things about the Stephenville case that puts doubt on the UFOs as being “bona fide” is that the squiggly lights that have been videotaped are really “zoomed-in video of a star.” Maybe. I can’t say, and I wasn’t there. It’s certainly likely. In typical Trickster fashion however, these kinds of lights have been seen in other UFO events, and in other paranormal events.
Then there’s some nit picky stuff from MUFON about most sightings in Dublin, not Stephenville. I’m not sure what their point is; do they mean to imply that because UFOs (apparently not “bona-fide”) were seen in Dublin, it’s not worth investigation?
MUFON was on the case early on, and acknowledged interesting things were happening.
