Synopsis: Two Blocks from Slab Town is based on the actual events of Cissy, an eight year old girl, growing up in a Southern, rural town during the 1960?s. Her father was a World War II veteran suffering from a post traumatic stress disorder. Cissy lives two blocks from Slab Town, an area where homes were made out of rough, slabs of wood. These huts provided little protection from its predatory environment, animal as well as human. Cissy's mother was a clairvoyant, while her father was a clairsentient. She was able to survive and protect those around her by unleashing her sixth sense. As Cissy, I was glad to have this experience. I learned that a single flame can cut through the darkness making its own path.

It was summer. NO SCHOOL! I could sleep in late or get up early. Usually, I chose to get up early.
A few times I found myself waking up in the dirt road. I was lying in the middle of several rings indented in the sand. I do not know how I got there. Walking in my sleep was one thing, but drawing in the rings in the sand, just did not make any sense.
At first, I thought it was aliens. However, upon my return to the house, the screen door was unlatched and the back door was open. If aliens did kidnap me, why would they bother with unlocking the doors?
I do remember one dream I had. I was inside some weird house that had light-up gadgets everywhere. They reminded me of pinball machines, since they had that kind of sound. I really liked being there, so it was far from being considered a nightmare. Could I have actually been on a spaceship?
I woke up several times like this and never told anyone. I wanted to keep it to myself as if I had special powers. It would be so cool if I were some kind of super hero. I imagined being a mixed breed of two alien races. My father came from Jupiter and my mother from Saturn. I possessed a horn on my head giving the power of invisibility. There was a ring of small red dots on my left hand allowing me to release a strong current of energy known as a 'power punch.' Now, my eyes could change to silver when I put the 'whammy' on someone. I could hypnotize anyone if I looked at them long enough. With my magic powers, I was invincible. Sometimes, when I could not get to sleep at night, I imagined my life as this alien girl. I named her, 'Saturna.' (A few years ago, I wrote a book about Saturna. A link to the book is provided at the end of this story.)
When Father went fishing, he would get up at the crack of dawn. He made the best breakfast. My mouth always watered upon smelling the food he prepared. Usually, it was fried eggs and grits. He knew how to add just the right amount of salt and pepper. The food was great! Better than Mother's, of course.
Usually, Joey managed to wake up for Father's breakfast. When Father left on his fishing trip, Joey and I would find something to do. On one of these occasions, Kyle joined us. He had told us about a hill of white sand down by the orange grove. He had stumbled across it with his best friend, Danny.
Joey and I followed Kyle down the railroad tracks. These tracks were between an orange grove and a creek which faced our house.
