Many UfO investigators said they were there, but they weren't. I know because I was there.
These sightings were a blue print of what our own space program endorsed: observe, investigate and map the major travel lanes of the ETs.
It seems that we learned from them how to map a society and gather information but to avoid at all costs engagement. The UFOs have been in a close proximity to the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border since the 1950s. Exeter was just another spot on a map.
Now if you want to do it right...there is a way. Almost all UfO investigators have a map of the area on their wall. Pushpins of different colors indicate different sightings, Blue for flyover daytime, low light, or black at night or green for landings or brown for beaches etc. As the sightings heat up you see a definite pattern. One who does this can almost see the intelligent pattern of these enigmatic flying objects.
This was no mystery. As the sightings tend to pile up in one particular area you start to realize that a major UFO sighting is going to happen. Of course you hear of stars that twinkle, but at 25 feet above the ground with a hill in back of them?
Then you get the Piper cubs that fly in and out of local airports but when you go to these facilities no one flew on those nights but the local media accuse these small aircraft of doing weird things that they cannot do, such as: stopping in mid air, flying backwards.
Ray Fowler and John Fuller were very apt in their handling of these cases. John Fuller's book, Incident at Exeter, was compelling in its factual accounts surrounding the multifaceted sightings in this time period.
I am sure that the Police that witnessed the strange lights shot at them because they believed the lights were a threat. This sighting, because of the police witnesses and the firing of their weapons at the objects contributes to the UFO Exeter lore and makes it extraordinary and adds the 'icing to the cake'.
