UFOs Sighted At Bridgnorth
New Evidence

by Malcolm Brenner

Dear Mr. Vander Ploeg,

Thanks for sending on the Bridgenorth photo. I gave it a going-over last night, and IMHO what you have here is neither an aircraft nor a bird nor an artifact. It is, in fact, an authentic unidentified flying object, and a rather puzzling one.

First of all, let me describe my own analysis. I use an Apple MacBook running OS 10.5, Leopard, and Photoshop Elements 3. I took the photo you sent and first of all looked at the metadata.

Read original report: UFO Sighting At Bridgnorth?

The file resolution is a full 12 megapixels, which is good for our purposes. The shutter speed was 1/640 second, which is fast enough to stop most action and hand movement, the f-stop was f3.1, almost wide open, and the ISO was 64. The lens is an excellent Schneider, the zoom setting was 12mm, which on this camera is probably about as wide as the wide-angle gets. It's equivalent to a 35mm lens on a 35mm camera, moderate wide-angle, so it sees an angle of view of 54º horizontally.

All this is conducive to good, high-quality images.

As you mentioned, this is a daylight picture. The sun is to our right and at about 45º elevation, judging from the shadows; it is still illuminating the front of the bridge pier, but is moving around to the side. The metadata says 13:05:46 which I make out to be 1:05 p.m., but it looks later than that. Perhaps the camera's clock was off. Weather is bright sun with clouds.

First off, it's not surprising that Dave didn't see this when he took the picture as most P&S digital cameras don't have viewfinders and you can't see anything on the monitor screen in bright sun. I can't, anway. You're lucky if you know what you're pointing the camera at!

Second, the first thing I noticed is that there is not one but 2 UFO's in this picture:

The second one is to the left of the clock tower. It is vague, like the first one, but appears tilted at a 45º angle to the horizontal. More on this in a moment.

I began to work on the first object like you did, with conventional tools. I cut out the object from the rest of the photo to isolate it and speed up processing. The first thing I noticed is that this image has two parts. Obviously, there's nothing to cast a "shadow" on in the sky (except clouds, none nearby), so what you perceive as a shadow is actually a dark solid object with something lighter on top of it. There does appear to be faint evidence of a structure tilted at about 45º, the "tail fin."

I subjected this image to contrast, sharpness and color enhancement, and got this result:

If you blow this up and examine it minutely, you'll find several puzzling things. First of all, this is clearly two objects, an "upper object" that is white and vague and a lower object that is darker and more defined. "Glowing edges" reveals this clearly.

Looking at the enhanced image, I see that the lower object appears to me as a flat surface with several spherical objects of about similar size sitting on top of it. There could be as few as four or as many as six. These objects are rather dull, compared to the light on the metallic clock tower, but they have faint highlights. The highlights and shadows are consistent with the direction of light on the other objects in the photo. I have outlined these objects here:

The white area above the darker object resembles a small cloud. It has no definite edges and no shading. There appear to be some lighter and darker areas in the cloud, which suggests to me there are light sources (perhaps reflecting light rather than emitting it) in the cloud. Colors in the lower object are mainly blue and green.
