Suddenly, I heard a noise. I thought it was Kyle and Joey returning. Then I saw him! He was wearing overalls and a plaid shirt carrying a rifle. I crouched down hiding in the shadows. Why did this man have a rifle? I looked to see if he were hunting a rabbit or some other kind of animal. Oops! I saw it. It was a sign with the words, NO TRESPASSING.
How could a lake belong to someone? Well, Mother did not raise no fool. I began to belly crawl out the back end of the bridge. It took a lot digging to remove the coarse sand and gravel out of my way.
Once on the tracks, I slithered like a snake along the wood planks. I am glad I was skinny, because the iron rails concealed my body. I kept on moving. I needed to warn my brothers about the man with the rifle.
Eventually, I saw Kyle and Joey in the distance.
"Where did you go?" I asked Kyle.
"Just looking around," he said smiling.
I hated it when he grinned like that. It meant he was hiding something. He had no intention of telling me and that made me 'madder than a hornet.'
"I want to know what you're keeping from me!" I fumed.
"Okay! We had to pee," he laughed.
"Yeah!" I huffed. "Well, I still think you're up to something."
Keith and Joey walked away from me towards the lake. I ran ahead of them. I stood in front of Keith.
"What is wrong with you?" asked Keith. "You're acting paranoid."
"You can't go this way?" I replied.
" Why not?" asked Keith.
"There's some man with a rifle," I said.
"Really?" muttered Keith.
I grabbed his arm. "I'm serious! There's a 'no trespassing sign.' The lake belongs to the man with the rifle.
Keith stared into my eyes. He knew I was telling the truth. He nodded. I let go of his arm.
"Okay, Cissy, let's turn around and head back home," replied Kyle.
Kyle turned around and walked back the other way. Joey quickly caught up with him. Over his shoulder Keith mumbled, "I've found a short cut home."
I heard Joey snicker.
Well, that settled it. Both of them were up to no good.
