Kyle claimed he knew where we might cut across the creek. This would save us time in getting back home.
I stood on the edge of the creek. No way was I going to try and jump across. Maybe, that's what Kyle and Joey had planned. They would try to coerce me into jumping. Of course, I would fall in getting my britches wet.
Kyle ran and easily glided over the creek with his long legs. Joey and I stood waiting.
"Oh…come on…Cissy…jump across it," he urged.
"Nope...," I stated with my hands on my hips. I glanced around for another way to get across.
"How about you…Joey?" Kyle grinned.
"I will after Cissy does it!" exclaimed Joey.
'Well, you little worm,' I thought. I felt like pushing him in.
"Oh, come on, Cissy! Are you a chicken?" asked Kyle winking over at Joey.
I stood glaring at Kyle. He did not say another word. Then he looked at Joey, "Come on, Joey. You can make it."
"What?" I hissed. "Joey's not jumping."
Joey did not listen to me and took a few steps back.
"I'm not a chicken," he said.
He ran. I grabbed him. He wiggled away from me pulling himself to the ground.
I looked down at him. "Did you know that leeches live in the creek? If one gets on you, the only way to remove it is with a knife."
He stared up at me. "Huh?"
Then he stood up. "I'm staying with Cissy."
"Okay…go the long way around," replied Kyle leaving us to fend for ourselves.
I had a strong feeling there was another way to get across. Scanning the area, I noticed what looked like either an alligator or a log about ten feet away.
"Sh-h-h," I warned Joey. "Stay here."
"Where are you going?" he whispered.
"I'll be right back. Just stay put."
I walked in the high grass and cattails running along the side of the creek. I kept an eye open for moccasins and alligators. Creeping up to the elongated, dark shape, I studied it carefully before getting any closer.
It was a large, rotting log covered with green algae and grey fungus. I waved for Joey to follow the trail I had carved.
"It's a log," I called out to him.
The log covered the width of the creek, like a bridge. Standing on top of it, I decided to try it out. It was not slippery as I walked across it.
