UFO Digest Movie Review:An Insight into District 9by Sam Willey

From my point of view, being involved with the UFO subject, I felt I could see the movie with an increased depth. All the time I was thinking about if the events in District 9 occurred today in real life. To me the events portrayed in the movie appear one hundred percent feasible, I considered at many points about how people in the cinema would react to such an event involving extra terrestrials actually happening. The main question I pondered was whether or not mass panic would take place or if like in the movie the people of the world accept the alien presence without panic. The movie shows aliens separated from human beings in District 9, confined to this space and not allowed to be integrated into society. Despite the aliens showing obvious signs of being highly intelligent life forms they still become treated as animals. I felt this made the movie even more believable as we humans at times can be very judgemental just by how something or someone looks. I believe that if the events in District 9 were to take place, the reaction by the government would be the same to immediately separate human from alien, from simple fear of the unknown. The aliens in the movie arrive with technologically more advanced weapons and the government immediately wants to know how to obtain this technology. It has been theorised on many occasions that this process of reverse engineering of extra terrestrial technology has already taken place, possibly on multiple occasions. For example the reported crash and recovery of an ET space craft in Roswell back in 1947, many believe technology was recovered and reverse engineered from that particular incident.
From both the prospective of a UFO researcher and a film student the special effects are very distinct and impressive throughout the movie. As a researcher it made me realise how much more vigilant we must be when analysing footage of alleged, genuine UFO’s. I mean I understood the deal with hoaxing and how easy it can be for these hoaxers to generate a piece of UFO footage, but watching District 9 heightened that understanding. Some scenes show footage in amateur quality as if someone on the ground was recording footage of this huge alien mother ship. These scenes struck me as incredibly realistic; the footage didn’t look fake it actually looked like the genuine real deal. As a researcher this makes things many times more difficult if we can’t even figure out the fraudulent footage from the genuine encounters. From the prospective of a film enthusiast these scenes further helped the development and feel of the entire District 9 experience. The amateur footage further complimented the documentary style narrative of the production. I believe this aspect of the movie made District 9 that bit more special compared to other science fiction movies we have seen over the years. Though other science fiction movies such as Independence Day and Close Encounters of the Third Kind have managed to impress cinema goers, District 9 offers a totally different experience. I judge it to be a one of a kind science fiction, when you consider its unique elements which separate the movie from others.
To really conclude my review and insight into District 9 I would like to say as my closing remark that this movie brings forward important issues of extra terrestrial first contact. Being a UFO researcher and having an avid interest in space and exploration of our universe I felt the production made me consider that important matter of first contact. As mentioned earlier it made me think about what our visitors would be like, what would their values be and most importantly how would we cope with their presence. I believe that as we start to come towards the end of 2009 we consider these important questions as another decade begins to come to a close. The UFO subject appears to be a web of mystery shrouded with doubt, uncertainty and lies. Lies on the part of the world governments and lies on the part of those who wish to discredit the genuine research of those involved with the UFO subject. For all we know the questions I thought about whilst watching District 9 may have already been discussed and answered by the powers in charge of this planet. But the day will come when the doubt and uncertainty will cease, when we as individuals must consider those important questions, when first contact hopefully becomes a reality.
District 9, UFO Radio Final Rating – 8/10 (A unique approach to science fiction that makes you constantly think and wonder about what secret may lie ahead)
