Two Blocks from Slab Town The Scissorsby Joey Boon

When we started our little adventure, I remember sayin’ to Cissy," You think there’s any spiders under here?!" Once again, she had that look on her face (like I was the dumbest kid in the block) and replied," No, Stupid!!…… what do you think?" Just keep your head, low……o.k.?" So, off we went to try and find those miserable pair of scissors.
We started off around the edges. You see, both of us sure didn’t like spiders, didn’t care that much for snakes, either. When we came up short lookin’ around the edges, we knew what was comin’ next……that’s right!……in the middle we headed. The farther we went in, the darker is seemed to get. I mean, man, it would’a scared a tick off a dog - it was that dark…… and definitely that scary.
So, here we were, lookin’ in what must’a been the center of the shed when all of sudden the wind kicked up a bit. The sky turned a dark grey color, and then it started to rain. All of a sudden the soil beneath us began to shiver, a bit. I looked over at Cissy and couldn’t get the words out quick enough - that’s right, she vanished right there and then!……right in front of my eyes!!
I was startled, to say the least. Before I could think another thought in my head, the same thing happened to me! That’s right, Cissy and I had fallen in ( I guess you might wanna say) a genuine "black hole".
When we got down to the bottom of that hole, you wouldn’t believe the things we saw unless you were there - and me and Cissy were! I mean, we found toys and stuff we forgot we ever had! Cissy always blamed me for losing Mary’s head. Now, for those of you that don’t know ( and that should be all of you ), Mary was one of Cissy’s favorite dolls. I mean every where she went, Mary went. You know about that song - "Mary had a little lamb?!" And everywhere she would go, the lamb would be sure to follow?!
Well, that was Cissy and her special friend, Mary. So, when Mary’s head popped up, I couldn’t wait to tell Cissy just what I felt at that particular time! I mean, she had it comin’! That’s right, ole’ Blacky had paid me one too many visits concerning Mary’s head. But, you know what?……before I could get anything out of my mouth, Cissy found those long-lost pair of scissors. They were right there, right in the center of this thing (we referred to later) called the "black hole".
When Cissy showed me those pair of scissors, something happened!…… I mean, I put my hands on them and all of a sudden I heard a popping sound. It was like we were snatched out of this big black hole thing we were sittin’ in. Suddenly, we were back where we started from. The only thing different was that Cissy still had those pair of scissors in her hands.
She and I just sat there under the Mulberry tree, pondering our thoughts for a while. After a bit, she looked at me and said," Do you believe what just happened?!" I was shiverin’ and said," What’a ya mean?" She said, "what’a you mean?!……you were there with me, just now - weren’t you?" I said," What’a ya mean?!" She laughed and said, "O.K. funny boy, let’s just make sure that Mom gets these pair of scissors…… now!"
When Cissy handed the pair of scissors to Mom……well…… Mom couldn’t believe it. She started to cry, a bit. Cissy and I looked at each other - which we’d done a lot that day - and thought," What?!!" We’d never seen Mom cry, too much! But, she sure made a mess of herself when it came to those pair of scissors.
She later explained to us that her mother had those particular pair of scissors when she was just a child. She further added that her Mom had passed away when she was only 12 years old, and that the last thing she ever got from her was that old pair of scissors. They must’a meant a great deal to her! Cissy and I (for the first time I can remember) felt really proud and fortunate about finding those particular pair of scissors and the joy we saw (that day) on Mom’s face. You know, we all had it hard (back then) and anytime we could find a reason to smile……well, it just made the journey that much easier to take.
Even now, I think about that old shed and the many secrets it contains. But, there is one thing for sure……Still, today, I can’t stand spiders…… and I don’t have much use for them snakes, either!
