I find the idea that President Barack Obama would want to “destabilize” the USA in any way downright ridiculous and offensive. Come on, Dirk, you know that we rabble rousers down here are easily stirred up. We don’t need you aloof Canadians – with your universal health insurance and sound economy – trying to make us feel any more inferior than we already feel. That will only get us stirred up until we all say crazy things. Give us a break!

Let us be proud of this great moment in our history: We elected Barack Obama, a wise and honest leader who had almost no TV presence at first. That's a real first. We probably now have the greatest president since FDR. In only one and a half years, he has managed to get our recalcitrant and corrupt Congress to pass major health care legislation and major financial reform legislation, two feats so enormous that I doubt there is another person in this country who could have achieved it. He is making progress on limiting nuclear arms and on protecting the environment and developing clean energy sources. He clearly wants to help the needy and protect the earth. His heart is in all the right places. He is an extremely intelligent, diplomatic, and thoughtful statesman and scholar. He has traveled to more areas of crisis and need and spoken with the people in those places and started working on their problems than any president in my lifetime – all in only 19 months.

No other president we’ve had would have had the guts to shut down all deep water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico after the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. They all would have buckled under to pressures from big oil and the foolish public outcry that rose against it even though it was the only really smart thing to do.

I voted for him the first time, and I’m going to vote for him again. Go, President Obama! We love you down here in Louisiana!
