I’d guess the same one who made it split it. Less tongue in cheek, before I bite it, the geologist in me thinks in terms of an accumulation of water from either a rain or concentrated due accumulations built up in a fissure over a period of time, and the desert temp fell below freezing, expanding the water to ice thus causing the sudden rupture. I guess this because it is a common event in desert regions, I think Friar Occam would approve my supposition, and because I have a geological bias.

I spent a lot of time at Giant Rock in 1995, 1996, and 1997, there were dirt bikes and gang-type bikers all over, graffiti covered the once-sacred boulder, fires had been built in cracks and underneath countless times. I did not feel safe staying there after dark. In my opinion, humans who didn’t give a darn–eventually inadvertently split Giant Rock, perhaps similar to what is happening to Earth. I’m not sure if this is what the author means in this fascinating article.
