In the 1960s and '70s, Shaver began looking for physical evidence of the bygone pre-historic races. He found it in certain rocks, which he believed were books that had been created by the great ancients, and embedded with legible pictures and texts. For years he wrote about these books, photographed them, and made paintings of the images he found in them to demonstrate their historic importance. He never succeeded in generating attention for his later findings during his lifetime, but in recent years, there have been exhibits of Shaver's art and photographs.
THE MANTONG ALPHABET
Richard Shaver wrote in the first issue of Hidden Worlds magazine (1961) that out of the many things he learned from his cavern mentors was the ancient language called Mantong. "Here is a tool," he said, "that could be used to confirm the ancient race of Atlans and Titans, to trace the remnants existing today, in modern languages."
With this alphabet, each letter has a distinct meaning. By putting each letter together, you have a meaning that perfectly describes something. By using the Mantong alphabet, we can learn primal truths about everything in creation. For example: the word "cat" translates to "See Animal Beneficial force". The word "dog" translates as "Detrimental Force Orifice Generate". The biblical name "Adam" translates as "Animal Detrimental Force Animal Man."

Shaver sometimes joined several letters to alter a word's meaning. Dero, translated literally, means "Bad force Energy Horror Orifice," yet Shaver often translates the "ro" as part of the word "robot," though Deros are not robots and do not have the redeeming T that "robot" has.
THE SHAVER MYSTERY
Shaver's stories were extremely popular with readers who wrote letters to Amazing Stories detailing their own strange experiences with the Dero and other types of underground weirdness. As time went on, Shaver's tales became intertwined with the developing UFO phenomena, and a competing theory in the 1950s and '60s that UFOs came from beneath the Earth was almost as popular as the extraterrestrial hypothesis.
